Can you suggest a good ballet movie??
The Turning Point is brilliant. And you get to see Mikhail Baryshnikov. White Nights also has several performances by him.
The Red Shoes is the movie that made many young girls want to learn ballet in the 50s. Also, Hans Christian Anderson has a couple of wonderful ballet sequences (made for film, however, so utterly impossible on stage).
I would recommend looking at the link below for names you recognize for either ballets or dancers and indulge in some filmed ballets, not just movies. Movies are good because they will have a few bits and pieces of dance in them but there is nothing quite like seeing a stage performance. (My personal choices would include anything done by Balanchine, who broke through the traditional ballet choreography and made ballet exciting again!) and anything with Baryshnikov (who I had the fortune of seeing on stage and thought was brilliant before his name became huge). Or choose ballets you love . . . Swan Lake and Giselle are on the top of my list.
