First you have to look at the market, are there children who will take lessons from you in your area? Is there already a dance school in the area you'll have to compete with? What credentials do you have that will cause parents to want to choose you as their children's teacher? Then you have to find out your upfront costs: How much will it cost to rent the space? Estimate the cost of utilities (water, electric, gas and phone). Add in some start up costs like: sound system, flooring, mirrors, ballet barres, and office equipment like a desk, phone, copy machine, computer and software to track classes and students. These are pretty much the essentials to start a good dance studio. Once you have gotten these prices, then figure our what you will charge for tuition. Then look at those numbers and figure out how many students you will need taking classes each month in order to keep your business running.

For me it will cost about $8000 in start up costs to get a studio going. Once I have equipment purchased my monthly overhead will run approx. $4000 to $4500 per month. My tuition will be $45 per month for a one hr class. So I will need at least 100 students taking a one hour class in order to keep it going. Now that pays the bills BUT does not pay me, the teacher. So I have to get more students in the studio in order to have money to pay myself. As a business owner I will pay myself only after the bills are paid so my paycheck is totally dependent on the number of students I have.
