What's Your Favorite Opera/Opera Singer/Ballet/Movement/Compose...
Hi, I was just wondering what operas, singers, ballets, movements, and composers you guys like. I love opera, classical, and ballet. My mom used to be an opera singer. Anyway, I'd like to be introduced to something I may not know, so I'd like more obscure suggestions, please.
What's Your Favorite Opera/Opera Singer/Ballet/Movement/Compose...home theaterI'll take an order of Ariadne auf Naxos ( with Jessye Norman, please), Romeo and Juliet (Prokofieff) last movement of Mahler's 4th Symphony, and a whole lot of sides, please.
To my mind, there's not much that you can listen to that would send you the wrong way.
I also love the King's Singers for their vocal audacity as well as skill.
For an extremely mind-boggling singer, look out for the recordings of Ramon Vinay. he sang in the 40s and 50s, so it will be difficult to find much. He started life as a bariotne, became a heldentenor, and wound up singing bass in his 70s. Goosebumps the whole way.
Your mom will prbably steered you to all the Americans of that generation, but listen to Eleanor Steber again.
Don't forget the great Marian Anderson. I saw a couple of old clips on an arts channel 3 years ago or so- had me in tears. You're probably used to the phenomenon of feeling an opera singer's voice flow over you, but that same feeling came outta the box! Truly amazing.
