Can someone give me some insight into the world of keyboard synthesizers? As in, what to look for in a synth? What makes a good one, what brands are overpriced etc?

I've been playing piano for 10 years now, recently played Chopin Scherzo 2 Op. 31. After hearing Dream Theater and Jordan Rudess, I wonna get into the keyboard world and you know, diversify. Currently looking to buy a keyboard/synth. And I dont know anything. Some suggestions maybe? Looking for about $1000ish-1300
