What do you think is BETTER in music?...?
Having enormous amounts of technical skill or the ability to write a catchy tune that really gets under you skin?
Two bands that I love are polar opposites:
Green Day and Dream Theater.
Green Day's music is simple enough that 12-year olds just learning guitar can play it, but it's catchy and enjoyable to listen to.
Dream Theater is a phenomenally talented and complex band whose songs are full of time changes and intricate use of advanced music theory, but that same complexity makes it hard to hum one of their tunes and as a result you don't hear Dream Theater on the radio or MTV.
Obviously the ability to adhere to K.I.S.S. (keep it simple, stupid) is more desireable to sell records and become famous, but what do YOU think is a more admirable trait?
What do you think is BETTER in music?...?opera sheet musicI prefer talent than catchy tunes. So I'll have to agree with you on Dream Theater. Magnificant band. If you like them, you might also want to check out a side-project they've got called Liquid Tension Experiment, which is an all instumental project they're doing. VERY great music. They've only put out two albums, though, and I think they might be done with it. Not sure.
Whether or not a song sells isn't what matters in music. What matters is the impact the song has on you. Green Day has never had any real impact on me. Sure, I can remember the tune, but that's because it's so childishly simple. Complex bands, like Dream Theater, make better music (in my opinion) because of the fact that the music changes as it goes. It's not the same, boring, drawn-out crap that other groups force-feed us. It's raw, unfiltered talent, and that's what makes it better.
