What do you think is BETTER in music?...?
Dream Theater (and many other bands) blows Green Day away. No contest.|||technical ability don't mean sh*t. case in point: yngwie malmsteen. or dream theater, for that matter. not that i don't appreciate what technicality can bring to a band, particularly a great drummer -- hell, one of my favourite genres of music is math rock, which is all about intricacy and complexity, but i f*cking hate prog, which is just about m*sturbation (yes, they censor that word). a catchy tune is like a quick sweet kiss. a technical wankfest is like an unwanted stranger spooging all over you.
i think the greatest achievement is being weird and complex and doing something NEW and ORIGINAL while still being catchy and, well, musical. what's the point of being weird and complex if it's just going to alienate people? that achieves nothing. it's much more subversive (and difficult... hence a far greater achievement) to make something weird and complex that people are going to want to listen to for musical, aesthetic, rather than technical reasons. i love the way bands like soundgarden and tool are able to do this.
