Why are immensly talented musicians ignored by the mainstream media?

Bands like Dream Theater/Porcupine Tree/rush are all so talented, on their instruments, and songwriting, but get SO LITTLE of the attention they deserve. Do people just not have the attention spans to sit through their songs or what?

There's a lot of musicians that simply aren't interested in becoming famous they just want to make music. I used to live in Villa Park, IL and go to a small pub on St Charles Rd called Adam's Place. The owner ran an open mike on Wednesdays and I'd be there most of the time. There were, of course, many clumsy acts. Some quite comical even coming from guys that knew they weren't good and played up on this. But he had several regulars that were quite good, certainly good enough to put on record and sell. There were even a few musicians I distinctly remember who absolutely floored me with their talent. One short black man named Rick who was under 5 feet tall , and a bit stocky. Very plain looking guy. He played the absolute best blues lead I have ever heard. He would improv solos changing his scaling consistently , always shading the dynamics and articulations and a lot of times he would play large sections of leads in whole chords, not just simple bar chords, and fast.
