The only way to stop this is to reject their pending membership (They want to join but need approval). Note that if you invite someone to your restricted group, they won't see your events until they accept the invitation.

SO, you might consider changing your group so that only people invited can join (closed, as opposed to restricted). You can do that by clicking on management > membership (under group settings). Hope that helps!
