If I remember correctly the Hawaiian islands were under independent royal rule. Well, American businessmen wanted in on the pineapple farming thing for profit. The Hawaiian royal family wasn't going to allow the business men to take over the fields like they had in other countries (think Cuba and sugar). The businessmen overthrew the Hawaiian royal family. The US wasn't going to let them in at first, so Mr. Dole (think of canned peaches) was the president of Hawaii for a while. Eventually the US annexed Hawaii as a state.
