I am trying to open it in Excel 2000 and get "xlsx file format is not valid" I probably need to update Excel or download a viewer but I can't find any info.

Or of course pay for an upgrade to Office2007... all the fun of learning a whole new way of working for just one file.

Save a copy of the file and try manually renaming the extension to xls ... then try and open it with your current software|||Can you get the person who sent you the Excel file to do a save as and select Excel 97 - 2003 and resend the document? That would be easiest.
Failing that you can download a compatibility pack. Here is the website:
