It depends on the state of the ground, but usually the minimum width is 600mm.|||450mm|||For a single storey extensions you could get away with 450mm but you have to think practically about getting into the trench to dig, so 600mm generally is the norm. The depth is more critical and this would depend on the type of ground and whether or not there are any trees near by. Most Councils suggest that you dig down 1.0 metre and call them into inspect. if they see any trees they may well suggest that you go down further. You also have to be aware of any drains that are close by. The bottom of the foundation should be at least as deep as any adjacent drain. If you find a drain passes through the foundtaion you will have to form a bridge over it. This can be done by laying in some 150 x 100 reinforced concrete lintels during the casting proccess
