Extension Spring Broke on My Garage Door?

Google

I have a garage door One piece wooden, up and over, with two large springs on each side. One of the extension springs broke. I see you can buy extension springs at home depot. Is this a job I can do myself and replace with a new spring? Is it difficult? I read lots of answers that talk about the other kind of garage door with the spring in the middle being dangerous but what about replacing a spring on the side. If I have to call in a repair person to do the job what can I expect to pay?

I think that I paid something like 150 some years ago, but it was one of those in the center. Since it isn't that much, just call a professonal to do it. Then you are covered. good luck.

I replaced mine with no problems. Had to prop the door up, so the spring was not extended. It was a long time ago, but I believe I had to spread a few coils with shims. to get the spring long enough to be hooked up.

I have no idea what a repair person would charge.|||we got ours fixed for 150 its kinda hard to do it cane be doen yourself but it is kinda dangerous too... We were fixing one once and just got it up and all of a sudden because the sprint had a defect in it snapped and the garage door came down on my daughters back inuring her..... So I would like call your area Garage doctor it isnt that expensive of a thing at least it wasnt for us. There also can be soem factor sinto why it snapped that should be looked into too so a professional would kno what to look for in our case the builder NV homes who built our house did not have a stud right to support the spring and over time it was going to cause a issue and it sure did in the end nv was forced to repar the door way and pay for the spring for the builing defect..... but neathertheless I would call in a pro..|||Unless your very handy i would not attempt this. the new doors have a safety cable running thru the spring so if this happens again it will be contained to the cable and not fly all over. Have the installer put this cable on both springs. plus an installer can see other problems you may have with the door. I would replace all springs too.|||These are very dangerous if you don't know what your doing. If you replace it yourself get someone to help you and be careful. make sure your door is down and all the tension is off the spring, make sure all your connections are tight. Make sure your safety cable is in place before you try it.

I've seen those springs just about go through a roof when they break loose, they can kill you.|||Hire a company to replace the spring. I would suggest that you have them install a higher grade of spring...it lasts longer.

Garage doors with openers can be hazardous and cause serious injury. If you are willing to accept the liability and chance of possible injury to save prox $70, do it yourself. However, if you factor out the extra expense over the lifetime of the spring, you would be saving prox $7.00 per year. Is it worth it?|||yes you can do it yourself its simple.
