It tells what type of file it is and what program can use it|||it basically tells you the format of what the file is and maybe what the file contains.

mp3 , wma = music

jpg, gif, bmp = images

rar, zip = compressed files|||File extensions indicate what type of file and are used by the O/S to determine which application will be used to read the file.

Ex.

.doc = Word Document

.xls = Excel Spreadsheet

.bat = Batch File (notepad, wordpad usually)

.dll = driver file (used by the O/S, applications)|||Yep it gives us indication of the data format of the file. Can have good idea what program uses it too. Recently stumbled upon this blog about file extensions.
