First step to a house extension?
i want to build an extension to my house so i can have the kitchen on the same floor as the living room etc, it is currently in a converted basement. This will be a large job because the house is on a slope from front to back. any ideas please as to what the very first step should be? The house was built in 1900 so I'm looking at getting a grant. any ideas please as i've no idea what should be the first step.

Who you pay taxes to City or county, than go to that building permit office and ask for zoning. Tell that person your intentions of what you want. They will check and inform you of all restrictions such as hieght, set backs from property line, lot cover and all the important stuff. If they say your proposal can be done than go to step two.
Home additions are simple construction and don't require high priced archetichs, engineers and stuff. So make some phone calls to structural archetechs for estimates over the phone for the following. (there are several different kinds of architechs, you want building/structural architechs). Have the architech make you a paliminary drawing (this will cost you about $500) DO NOT let him have these engineered (to early) have him detail the drawings but not engineered.
