it opens with Marlow (main character) on a ship. the ship can't go anywhere so he tells a story, this story basically spans across the entire book.

-marlow is looking for a job and his aunt finds him one

-he goes to the city to get his job and signs a contract

-his aunt tellls him to save the people in Africa (the job is supposedly some sort of humanitarian effort in Africa)

-he goes to Africa and enters into a world of chaos

-before he meets the manager he stumbles across a grove full of dying natives and gets away from their quickly

-he talks to the manager (there is a mention of Kurtz who is the best ivory getter)

-some strange questions are asked

-Marlow hears the manage talking to his uncle about Kurtz and finds out that there are rumors about Kurtz

-they go to see Kurtz

-they get attacked by the natives but escape

-Marlow meets the Harlequin at the station

-they find out that Kurtz is alive

-they see Kurtz and find out he is sick

-they take Kurtz on the steamboat, Kurtz's African mistress stays behind

-Kurtz's ivory district is shut down by the manager even though he brought back a lot of ivory
