i am an amatuer photography but I was wondering what steps i have to take to be granted a press pass. for sporting events, news events, and things like this.

you make your request through the venue's PR department. for example, they might have a PR office, Public Relations, whose job it is to coordinate with the press to determine what news sources and how many will be allowed admittance, therefore, issued a press pass.
It's tough for an amatuer photog to get one since the badge issuers want to be sure the reputable press outlets get the "story" for publication into their newspapers, magazines and tv news. Obviously it's their job to be sure they don't just issue passes to someone looking for a "free ticket inside".
The times that I was issued them (years ago in my "other" life as a professional photographer) I had to enter a request on the newspaper or publisher's letterhead, originated or at least co-signed by the editor, explaining the purpose of the press pass and what they intended to do with the photos, before they would even consider issuing one.
