I am getting a tax refund but I cannot file until I get a social security number...do I need an exte

Getting a refund on taxes, but we are still awaiting the social security number for our son. It should arrive anyday. Do we need to file an extension, or can we just wait and file when we get the number since we are getting a refund? I know it sometimes different for state taxes too (we live in CA).

Why not just get an extension? All you need to do is fill out a simple form, which you can get at the IRS web site, and mail it in. You're required to file on time. The extension is designed for exactly your situation -- people who need extra time to get their info or documents. So why not just fill out the form and mail it in?

Normally, you're given the paperwork in the hospital to apply for a social security card. I know of a child born at the end of December and the social security card was back by mid February.

Was your child actually born in 2007? If your child wasn't born till 2008, you cannot claim him on your 2007 return.|||Officially and legally, you have to either file by tonight or request an extension.
