I haven't filed state or fed. income tax returns for 3 or 4 years. Can I file for an extension this year - orhome theater systemIf you have your w-2 forms you need to go back and file the first year first and then move forward. Say 2004 first, 2005 and then 2006. The reason for that is if you itemized you will have to claim the refund on your federal as income on the next years return. You can file for an extension, but you really need to file those other years of returns. Trust me if the government does your taxes for you and determine that you owe money they can and they will garnish your wages until your tax liability has been met.

Yes, you can file an extension (form 4868). But be sure to pay what you believe you owe by April 15.
If you have a refund coming your direction for the 2004 return, you have until April 15th to file that return. Or the refund is gone forever and ever, amen.|||Jan baby?
This year, after not filing for many years because of my disabled status, I got this, 'You have to file this year so we can give you a chunk of money' letter.
How's that for service?

The Pet Ponderer!|||you can file an "extension to file" for Federal Tax Returns, but you must pay if you owe, because it is only and extension to file.
If you have filed your 2004 return by 04152008; and are due a refund you won't get if you file after the 15th.
If you don't file an extension to file you can still file your returns after the 15th and pay failure to file penalties and other penalties added on for not filing timely.
