Important dates/events in history?
What do you think is the most important date in history? What about event? Why?
Important dates/events in history?theatre ticketsPersonally, it's my favorite "what if". People will suggest some aspect of 20th century history , the invention of the computer, which is perhaps the greatest invention of all history (after language).
However I submit a date which is important for what DID NOT happen.
Unknown specific date in 1223 AD, shortly after the Battle of the Kalka River, the warlord Subutai and Jebe, were recalled back to Samarkand to contest for the throne of the Mongol Empire, Jebe (the more proficient of the two generals) is believed to have died of the flu on the way home.
Had Jebe lived or both of them not returned to Samarkand, it is VERY likely that their armies would have been able to subjugate the fertile areas of Hungary and then the rest of Europe would very definitely have fallen due to the tactical and strategic deficiencies of the Feudal warrior system of the day.
Europe would have been at one stroke both under Mongolian control as well as forcibly converted to Islam or more likely simply purged (typically the resisting civilian populations in areas conquered by Mongols were reduced to 10-20% of their pre-war populations).
