Is it better to have a long .com name (site selling food products), or a short .us (or other extensi
Longer names are often misspelled or misunderstood. It all depends on how long and how hard it is to spell. It used to be that other TLD's (.biz, .net, etc) where not as respected as .com but that is no longer true. You run a risk of losing customers to the .com if you have a .biz or .us because some people mis-type but there is becoming very little difference as far as respect goes. If you have a long name, you need to capitalize the first letter of each word when advertising it so that people can read and understand. For example, if your domain name is writen; iimporttomatoesandotherveggies dot whatever it can be hard to understand. How ever if you advertised it like so; IImportTomatoesAndOtherVeggies dot whatever, it stands out and is understandable.
A domain name needs to be easy to remember and spell. Also there is some credence given to the possibility that there is some weight given to a domain name when computing search results. I have not seen proof of that but it is widely discussed by search engine guru's.
If your domain name is easy to misspell, register the misspellings and point them all to the same website. My web designer has 4-5 common misspellings all pointed to their main site. Somebody mistypes and still ends up where they need to be.
