Okay, I think this is the way to research it. I don't know if you're only looking at cultural events in France or wider for a start, or if it's all culture or just art, or if it includes social history. You somehow have to get artists' names, and keywords and then type them in the search followed by 1888 and you should get references to articles that include that date.
So look for general pages on impressionism, the history of film and photography, literature, music, etc. to find who might have been around at that time. The Wikipedia page on impressionism gives lots of names. Other keywords could be 'art nouveau' and 'la belle epoque' if you're concentrating on France. Also if you search for something like a cultural or arts timeline there could be something by year, which would make it a lot easier for you. Have you also tried just entering '1888' and seeing what comes up?
There's a good art history timeline here for starters:

If you're including composers there's a list here. A 'first performance' of a work is often seen as a major cultural event, so you could try this as a searchword with names and the date.

And there's a world culture timeline here that has a few entries for the year:

Hope this helps a bit, good luck!
