What events led to the Progressive Era?opera cdEntering a new century, most Americans were well aware of how their country was rapidly changing. What used to be a mostly rural society became more centered around growing cities. For decades, middle-class Americans had been alarmed by the rising power of big business, the increasing gap between the poor and rich, the violent conflict between labor and capital, and the dominance of corrupt political machines in the cities. Most disturbing to the minorities was that they were being treated as second-class citizens. Crusaders for women's sufferage added their voices to the call for political reform and greater democracy. In short, people were sick of the way things were headed in the US.
