What events triggered D-Day ?concert venueNice, Herr Oberst. But from my opinion, Saving Private Ryan is not a bad way to understand D-Day. Sure, the Germans were a lot better than how they showed in the movie... but it's pretty decent. Just pretend that many Germans fought like how Americans did, and they thought similarly as well. Majority of the German soldiers fought for their fatherland and their people, just like Americans, British, Russians and French did. It was Hitler and his Nazi-hardcore members who made Germany look really bad.
As for the cause of D-Day, read what Herr Oberst wrote.

"German aggression triggered D-Day. Americans had to find a way to get supplies into Europe fast so a full frontal attack was the only way to go about attacking the Germans.
America got involved because we wanted to spread Democracy, and it was settled at Yalta that we were going to go to war with Germany. Refer to your history book, or Saving Private Ryan if you want to go in depth." End Quote
