I would say that it's more of a goal towards which people are drawn than a detailed map of what will happen.
Before man made roads there were trackways (in England, at least) which led from one place to another. These trackways were often a mile or more wide with many paths taking different ways through what was then mostly light woodland. If one wanted to go from, shall we say, St Albans to Thetford, one used what is now called the Icknield Way and one would have taken the one or other of the paths, very likely depending on the time of year, since in the winter some of the paths would have been better than others.
It seems to me that 'destiny' is something like that - there are 'good' paths and 'bad' paths but they all lead to our ultimate goal which we have decided on (or have been persuaded to decide on) long before we start. Perhaps, at some point in our journey, we pause to rest and look around us and we see a multitude of other paths running roughly parallel to ours. We wonder why we are not on any of those paths and conclude that it was ordained that we should be where we are. In fact, that is not the case. We chose the path we are on. initially by starting on the particular road we left by and, subsequently, at each fork in the way by choosing which way we should go, whether it looked as though it led to our goal or whether it seemed an interesting detour.
