i've started installing 9.5mm but somebody said to meet the regs for 30 minute fire protection I should use 12.5mm. I this true?

Hmm. But that's for drywall / gypsum board. That may not be the same as plaster board. To the best of my knowledge, we don't use anything called plaster board here.

you should use the thicker one sound proofing and regs|||Go for the 'paper-thin' variety.|||3/8 ths inch foil backed should be adequate joists have to be in multiples of width and length of board ie 1200mm wide X 2400mm long you want joist centers 400mm and nogins at minimum 600mm centers (noggins fit between joist )|||In the states, the 12.5 is required.
