Is 38 or 39 weeks too late for a shower?

My self absorbed mother plans to throw me a shower when I am 38 or 39 weeks pregnant. I tried to explain to her that the baby may be here by then and I would like to have a shower at least 4 weeks before my due date (36 weeks at the latest).

She told me that she is "too busy" to throw me a shower anytime before 38/39 weeks. I am 27 weeks now and this is my first baby, I would like time before the baby is born to wash things and get things ready, especially since I plan to work up until the day I go into labor.

What do I do? Don't you think 38 or 39 weeks is way too late for a baby shower? Should I let my friend throw me the shower instead since my mom is too busy?

Yes. Why don't you tell your mom that your friend is throwing you one too. Then she can throw you another. I mean, it is risking it having it that late. And being that late in your pregnancy, you automatically go into your nesting mode. You have to feel that your place is ready for a baby to come home to. I totally understand where you're coming from. Another thought may be to approach your mom in a nice way and tell her that you want to take the load off of her, not to fell bad at all, but that your friend wants to help her out.
