My dog was never socialised. Is it too late?

I have a pomeranian (he's a large one though, about 8kg or 19 pounds) and he's about 1 year and 3 months old. We got him when he was 8 months old. He MAY have been taken to group obedience lessons by his old owners, but we can't be sure.

We're getting a 1 on 1 dog trainer for him. His old owners NEVER walked him and he was home alone for a lot of the day as his owners were at work.

Is it too late to socialise him? Right now, he barks at people and other dogs. Is it ever too late to socialise him? Or at least desensitise him? We're getting a dog trainer soon, hopefully they can help us...

No, it is not too late. Your trainer will be able to give you exercises to do with him to help socialize him. It can be done, it will take lots of patience and treats. If you want a great dog behaviour book to help out check out "The Culture Clash" by J. Donaldson (I think that is the author). It will give you such insite in what is going on from a dogs perspective, that it may just give you some keys to what your dog is going through. It is a quick read, and worth the effort.

Kudos to you for giving this pup a chance and trying to make his life fuller. I wish more owners took an interest like you have.
