Plausable excuses accepted by universities for late submitted work?

I recently got a new computer and the person who was transferring my old files to my new computer didn't transfer the folder that one of my university essays was in!

... Therefore my i need to re-research and write this essay which will take me roughly a week - therefore the work will be 2 weeks late!

The problem i have is that my true reason for late submission sounds as plausable as 'the dog ate my homework' therefore can someone please tell me an excuse which will put my late submission in good light to the universities late submissions board...

Please help!

First of all this isn't high school and the professors have heard every excuse in the book. So honesty is the best policy and your only hope. They will ask you where the old computer is and if you had done so much work why didn't you find the software to try to retrieve the files. Plus the oldest excuse in the book is to blame it on the computer.

They will also want to know why you didn't apprise the professor sooner. If you were that freaked out you would have sooner...... waiting will seem like you were just trying to come up with an excuse.

Did you print out stuff before? If asked can you speak right off of the cuff about what work you did, what direction it was taking and cite your sources? Did you check out books and have the reciept for the new computer?
