Tips for keeping bait alive until late tonight?
I am going to do some snook fishing tonight late. Before dark I'm going to go catch some bait and was wondering if their were any good methods of keeping them fresh.
Most of the time ill put them from 5 gallon buckets to a cooler with a couple aquarium pumps. They will be sitting for at least 4-5 hours. Is their a better way of keeping them fresh and lively until I get out on the water?
Tips for keeping bait alive until late tonight?imax theaterReasons for bait die off are stress, over activity,o2 consumpsion and waste tainted water!
To help relieve stress use more ice this slows the baits down and they use less o2 are less stressed and discharge less waste.
Bubblers are great but to help impart more o2 use a spray bar also not just a bubbler.
A good way to solve this problem is to use a live bait bag they are easy to make but you have to have the area to float one.Mine has a 3 foot square opening and is 4 foot deep and weighted on the bottom corners and framed with PVC to keep bag from lapping on to its self. The top frame is made from 3" and is sealed to float and the lower framing is drilled to allow water in to stabilize. And the weights help do both stabilize and keep bag down and away from bait.I have kept shrimp and minnow type baits alive for several days with this set up.The top is covered with a homemade mesh cover to keep baits in and birds out!
