Why are DirecTV closed captions often late?

We keep our closed captions turned on all the time, because we have a hearing impaired family member, and it's too much trouble to keep turning the captions on and off. We have DirecTV, and I've noticed that the captions are often very late, very out of sync, like a slow reader in a classroom, still reading the previous page of a book, while everyone else is on the next page. That almost seems symbolic of what happens to hearing-impaired people in society. Like they're left behind, on the wrong page.

I'm just wondering what causes this late-captions phenomenum. It never happened before we got DirecTV. Is it a phenomenum of satellite TV in general, or is it because of bugs in DirecTV's technology?

It's a broadcast issue for the program specifically, not DirecTV, in most cases. And even if it was a DirecTV issue you probably wouldn't really notice the difference.

Usually, though, I've noticed the problem is most prevalent on live showings. The person who types the captions doesn't know what's going to be said until it's said, right? then, to make it more complicated, the text is uploading as they type it so they can't make any errors (and those they make they have to correct so as to prevent any confusion). The people who type captions are trained to be quick, but you can only go so fast and even with todays technology uploading still takes a short time.
