Is it possible to have a static charge in a electrical socket?

my home theater is getting static coming through the speakers every now and then and if I unplug the receiver and plug it back in it fixes it. Is it possible to have a bad socket producing an electrical static in my electronics? will it damage my home theater?

If by static you mean noise, and not the kind of static electricity you get when you shock someone, yes it is possible for you to have noise introduced by the socket, but its unlikely and I wouldn't expect it to go away just by unplugging it. If that fixes your problem I would suspect something is wrong with your home theater system.

Now i think you were actually asking if you could have the other kind of static on the socket (the kind that builds up and goes Zap!)... the reason that wouldn't happen is there is really nothing in your socket to store that level of electricity (about 1kV or above)... If the socket is electrically connected to everything else in your house, and the grid , the static charge would dissipate right away.|||Yes,it's possible. Most likely in the case

if you have a weak ground connection.

If you don't have a surge protector type

system, you probablly should invest in one,

they're not that expensive.|||Ask your landlord to get the main electrical service checked for proper grounding. Sounds like there is a loose connection somewhere if you are getting feedback through your speakers.
