Are Collection Agencies allowed to charge interest on a debt? Can they charge late fees? Anyone know





My friend owes a credit card debt, he is getting charged late fees by HSBC, but they also sent the debt to a collection agency a while ago. Which has not contacted him yet. The debt was 159 dollars, and he sent 30 dollars to HSBC last week, and they charged him 30 dollars late fees, saying they received the payment 2 days late on the 15th, it was due on the 13th, and they sent the check on the 7th. Anyone know a link that explains my friends rights?

He doesn't know english, and his credit is getting ruined. They won't speak to anyone but him on the phone, and that is not helping, because he can't communicate with him. please help.

Your friend needs to contact the collection agency or HSBC and appoint someone to speak in his place. This worked for my dad when I took over his financial concerns. A simple power of attorney regarding this one matter can be easily drawn up. You will have to fax or mail a copy to the agency.
