How to be a better reader...?
Im just curious if anyone has any advice on how to be a better reader(obviously other than "practice"). I read alot, but I find that my attention span is to short to keep me interested for more than two maybe three hours. My mind always ends up wandering mid sentance which means I end up having to read half the book twice.
Some people have recomended listening to classical music or opera.
Any other suggestions?
How to be a better reader...?opera songsIt sounds as if you need to take a break at the two hour mark, get up and go do something (go to the bathroom, get a cup of coffee, walk to your mailbox...) then return to your reading.
Any time you find yourself having to re-read, get on your feet and move around, even if only to stretch.
You also may need to think about what kind of reading environment works for you. Some people need a quiet place with few distractions (like the library). Other people, however, need to be in a place with a lot of distractions (like a restaurant or coffee shop) in order to focus on their reading. I know this sounds illogical, but it's true for some people... because common wisdom says "go to a quiet place" folks who need to be in a busy environment often wind up frustrated.
You may also want to think about times when you did read for a long time without thinking about it. What was it about those times that helped? Were you in a comfy spot (couch, bed)? Were you drinking something caffeinated? Was the topic particularly interesting to you? This may give you clues to help yourself enjoy reading more.
