Let me elucide the question: Why is it that some movies show at movie theaters longer than other ones? It seems kind of weird some movies are in show for weeks, yet other are only in theaters for a week, if even that. Do some movies get pulled off because they did gross enough money?

I run a movie theatre, so I can give you the answer to this one: Previous answers are correct to a point in that if it isn't a popular movie, we're going to try to get it out as quickly as possible to get a new one in that might do better.

The box office receipts also say a lot. Most theatres have a certain dollar amount they use to determine whether or not to hold a film or move it on to get another one in. If it goes over that amount, then it will likely stay; if it stays under, them the film moves on to another theatre. In the case of the theatre I run, we only have one screen (but a lot of national recognition), so we are able to get several movies a year in as they open nationwide. Most times, we get them anywhere from 2 weeks to a month after national release, which is excellent for a city of about 3,800 people.

Each geographical area of the country is also different. For example, an "R" rated film is more likely to go over better in a big city than in a smaller town, where the values are more conservative. In the bigger areas, there is a wider array of tastes for films, while in small areas the tastes tend to be more down the middle of the road rather than veering off to one side or the other.
