Is it possible to become a Musical Therapist and also go to Medical School?
I'm looking into becoming a Musical Therapist but I noticed that it is not possible to have a Ph.D. in musical therapy. Would going to medical school help to have a better paying job and more job security? Thank You.
Is it possible to become a Musical Therapist and also go to Medical School?state theatreTrying to combine the two would mean almost two separate degree programs - a very time-consuming process. Obviously for music therapy the course work includes a lot of music along with psychology and such. Pre-med is a lot of math and science. My daughter has been seriously considering music therapy for several years (she is now a HS senior) and will probably get a music ed degree and go for music therapy certification as a masters degree (programs are not widely available for this.) She is a gifted musician and a very compassionate person but she is not at all into math and science! I have the degrees in science so I have a good idea what pre-med entails.
Music therapy is a growing field but jobs are still not widely available (not in rural areas like Montana) so medicine would have more job security. Where is your real passion here, music or medicine? I suggest you choose the one which would give you the most satisfaction.

Short answers: (a) sure but why? (b) yes.
Details:
Yes, you can become a music therapist and also go to medical school. I can't imagine why you'd want to do so. Music therapy is a respectable career that requires lots of dedication and training, so doing it first and then going into medicine--a career that also requires lots of dedication and training--makes little sense unless your goal, ultimately, is to become a researcher-professor in music therapy. Otherwise, you'll complete both courses of study and then abandon one of them--not exactly efficient.
And yes, any licensed medical doctor will have more job security and income than the typical music therapist.
