For me Elvis , but all the major bands are in there , but Elvis

did it on his own after being influenced himself , my opinion.|||Jim Morrison, Ray Manzarek, Billie Holiday|||michael jackson!|||Depends on which genre, but since we're here on rock/pop:

Beatles -obvious

Chuck Berry- influence on the Beatles

Led Zeppelin- influence on hard rock

Black Sabbath- " " " metal

David Bowie- that whole androgenous thing he popularized is still being done by countless makeup-wearing pop rockers of today.

Madonna- while not a *musical* genius, she's no doubt a clever marketer. Many female performers cite her as an influence.

Michael Jackson- Like him or not, def' a genius in his own right (penned most of his hits from the 80s) & an Enormous influence on current pop/dance-oriented videos. Anytime you see ensemble dancing in videos, that's Jacko's influence you're seeing.|||i'd just add the Velvet Underground to all the bands mentioned so far.
