i cannot fin this information anywere! please help!! its a homeowkr and its says "music phases : closed phases and open phases" ANY HELP WOULD B GOOD =]
Musical phases??soap operaI could be wrong, but I think you mean to ask about open and closed "phRases." A "closed" phrase is a phrase that ends with a note that gives it a sense of finality. If we're in C, for example, a phrase with a final note of "C" in the melodic line would be considered closed. Conversely, an "open" phrase would be a phrase which doesn't sound "complete" upon hearing the final note, implying that there must be at least one more phrase in order to complete the piece.
I must note that using a key name is somewhat of a bad example and I've avoided using the word "tonic" as the notion of open and closed phrases comes mostly from the Medieval period when people still thought of music in the church modes, not keys as we know them today.
