How did the design of the theatre and the relationship between performance/audience evolve over time

How have theatre performance areas (including the relationship between performers and audience) evolved from the Greeks and the Romans, through the various important eras of performance such as maybe Shakespeare and the origin of operas and perhaps even Victorians (maybe including magicians under the term 'performance'), to the modern and contemporary theatre and opera houses? Any general help would be of great benefit to me, simple or complicated. Even helpful references and links would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
