Blanlk screen with flashing curser?????

I thought that when my last PC did it, it was terminal for it. (I tried to boot up, and all it did was go throught the first screen was not allow me to enter the recovery screen (F10). I tried to boot up after performing a re-format of the hard drive via my recovery disk's (I also performed a hardware diagnostic as well, no faults shown), it still wouldn't go any further than the blinking curser in the top left hand of the screen.)

My new PC that I bought to replace the (as I thought knackard) one. I had it switched on, left alone to watch some TV, came back to it after about an hour, the screen was black, I figured that the monitor that been switched off by the PC, my last one would do that, I re-woke it, the icons were enlarged, and then it went blank and the flashing cuser in the top left hand of the screen. After switching off the PC at the wall, I re-started with no problems at all.

I am at a lost because nothing would get the computor to activate unless I powered off.
