How does the theatre business work?
For example do actors work for a particular society or are they all freelance? Where do the ideas begin? How long do actors perform a particular show for? How much are they paid? Does it depend on how well the show goes or do they have a pre-agreed fee? How do directors do everything i.e. decide which actors to hire, music to use, theatres, stage design etc.? How much money from ticket sales goes to the actors, director, orchestra etc.?
How does the theatre business work?star theaterAn awfully big question for such little boxes! The short version is: it depends.
Some theater companies are repertory and cast from either a stable of actors, or hold a single set of auditions for their entire season. Others audition for each show, so most actors are freelance.
Ideas begin with the playwright, and are interpreted by the director. Each director brings his own vision to a show.
Most shows have set runs, depending on the theater company. Some shows, ex. Broadway, run as long as the money is coming in. Paid actors will have a contract stating their length of run with the show. Non-paid actors will usually play the length of the run which is pre-determined by the theater company.
Pay varies. Name actors are paid higher than non-famous actors. Many actors in community theater are not paid at all. Some companies offer a small stipend to offset the cost of travelling to rehearsals.
