I like the old romantic idea.

I would get more light to be able to read and maybe a full length mirror. You can make a lamp and mirror look more "olden days" by painting it gold or a bronze color. Same with the lamp. You can buy beads from a craft store (antique colors like autumn-y colors) and sew them to the bottom of the lamp shade. Then paint the base with a corresponding color.

Again, go to the craft store and look for random stuff thats on sale. You can find picture frames for $1. Paint them and print rustic pictures from your computer or print black and white pictures of your friends and put them in there and hang them up!

An easy solution to not being able to paint is to use curtains, sheets or old material tacked on the walls with push pins.

I think using dividers is a fantastic way to close in the space. If you go for the old style victorian or even French you could use them to create a dressing area just like back in the day.

Use fabric or netting around the bed area so it almost looks like a canopy. Depending on what type of lighting fixture you have in your room you could even use the netting or fabric tied to the fixture and stretch it to the corners of the room. (of course if you have a ceiling fan....I wouldn't recommend donig that! )
